Hilo, HI Hilo, HI Temporary Temporary $68,556 - $97,560 a year $68,556 - $97,560 a year Duties Summary Performs difficult and complex professional architectural work in the development and/or review and approval of complete designs, plans, drawings, specifications, estimates, and reports for buildings and structures; may supervise the work of lower-level architects and building plans reviewers; and performs other related duties as required.
There are two (2) vacancies:
one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Office of the Director in Hilo one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Building Division in Hilo.
(Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range advertised above at which appropriate qualified applicants can be recruited.

Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
Examples of Duties Prepares and reviews preliminary studies, sketches, and renderings of major and complex buildings and structures.
Prepares, analyzes, and reviews complete designs, working drawings, specifications, and estimates for buildings and structures which include alterations, remodeling, rehabilitation, and major repairs.
Prepares and reviews the preparation of plans, details, writing of specifications, and cost estimates.
Supervises staff's work with the maintenance section for project implementation and completion.
Inspects construction and architectural work done by contractors to insure conformance to designs, plans, specifications, and contract agreements.
Prepares and reviews quantity and cost estimates of materials and labor, and approves materials.
Consults with officials to ascertain building needs and requirements for the development of architectural plans.
May recommend changes in materials and construction, and make necessary adjustments in architectural designs to fit structural, electrical, and mechanical requirements.
May recommend building sites and types of building best suited for the purpose intended.
Visits work sites to obtain measurements and other data necessary for projects.
Interprets building code requirements.
May inspect building construction in progress to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
Reviews and approves plans and specifications to comply with building code.
Confers with architects on necessary corrections.
Conducts site surveys to gather necessary data.
May supervise the work of lower level professionals and subprofessionals on a project basis.
Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and
Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural engineering (scan and attach your official college transcript), and three (3) years of professional architectural work experience, and possession of a valid license as a professional architect in the State of Hawai'i at the time of filing, (scan and attach your valid professional architect license to your application), and possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing.
You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire.
Examination:
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points.

Knowledge of:
The theory and practices of architecture and architectural engineering, principles of structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering as applied to architectural design, methods and techniques of building construction and construction materials, legal requirements of building, plumbing, electrical, fire, and health regulations as they pertain to building construction, the fundamentals of structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering as applied to architectural designs, and engineering mathematics sufficient to perform structural calculations and to relate field notes to architectural plans.
Ability to:
Design, detail, and draw features which are pleasing and functional for all types of buildings, structures and, installations, interpret design sketches and working drawings and visualize the character and quality of finish appropriate for the project, interpret building codes, identify and explain building code issues, prepare building specifications, cost and other estimates, and quantities of materials, inspect work during construction and any alterations of the various structures for compliance with architectural requirements, prepare and evaluate related reports, utilize permit tracking software, demonstrate effective communication skills, maintain cooperative relationships with consultants, contractors, other operating and staff officials, and the public, and plan, lay out, and supervise the work of lower level subordinates.
