This position is located in the Tropical Crop and Commodity Protection Research Unit in Hilo, HI. The incumbent will function as a Biological Science Technician (Biochemist) and will conduct a variety of research processes by performing complex technical duties in a field, laboratory, or greenhouse environment.

Sample duties of the position include:
Conducting plant and insect biological sample extraction, volatile trapping and chemical/ biochemical identification/analyses and field evaluation on insects (chemical ecology).
Managing inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, etc., to prepare solutions and formulations for use in the laboratory and the field.
Adapting and modifying new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
Using specialized instruments (i.e., microplate reader, HPLC, gas and liquid chromatograph, mass spectrometry and electrophysiological equipment) to conduct chemical and biochemical research experiments on insects.
Planning experiments from sample preparation and identification to formulation, and then chemical evaluation in the field for research projects.

Experience: you must have at least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service that included:

Operating and maintaining analytical laboratory instruments and equipment;
Assisting with the testing and modification of methods in sample preparation, extraction and quantification of biological compounds to fit the needs of research objectives;
Collecting, tabulating, and summarizing data using computers, word processing, and statistical analysis software;
Performing field assessments of identified chemicals on insects in a field environment; and
Rearing and maintaining of plants and insects.
